Welcome to Port Jervis Middle School
A message
from Cynthia Benedict, Principal
Dear Middle School
Parent/Guardians and Students,
 |
The fall semester is arriving
fast and a new school year is almost here! At the Port Jervis
Middle School, we are looking forward to a great 2011-2012
school year.
I hope everyone enjoyed their summer and the students are ready
to return to school refreshed and recharged.
We want to make this
the best year ever!
Our first day of school
for students is Tuesday, September 6,
and Open House for parents/guardians of all middle school
students is scheduled for Thursday, September 15 from 7 – 9 pm.
You will meet the teachers assigned to your child by following
an abbreviated version of your student’s schedule, have a
building tour, and meet the administration and support staff. We
will have a brief meeting for the parents/guardians of students
receiving AIS instruction to explain the AIS program from 6:45
to 7 p.m. We hope all parents and guardians will take advantage
of this worthwhile evening.
At the Middle School, we
had a number of changes in staffing over the summer.
Please join me in extending a warm welcome to the following very
talented and dedicated individuals:
Mr. Matt Carlozzi & Mrs. Erin Cross - Music Teachers
Ms. Stephanie Castano - Spanish Teacher
Ms. Jacqueline Jenkins - 7th grade Social Studies
Mrs. Cynthia McKay - AIS English
Mr. Alex Carver - 7th Grade English
In addition to new staff,
we also have a few
changes in our middle
school assignments:
Mr. Kaufmann, who previously taught AIS Math, will teach 7th
grade Math; Ms. Lundewall, who previously taught AIS English,
will now be teaching 8th grade English. Mr. Carver will be
teaching 7th grade English, replacing Mrs. Marshall who is on a
maternity leave. Ms. Robyn King, will continue to service
students M-Z, replacing guidance counselor, Mrs. Harget, who is
also on a maternity leave. Please join us in wishing our
staff a very productive and successful school year!
We have also initiated a
flexible daily schedule for this new school year.
Each morning, our students will report to Homeroom. After
Homeroom, on “A” Days students will proceed to period one and
continue through the day in sequence. On “B” days, after
Homeroom, our students will report to period 7 class & then
period 8 and then continue to periods in order: 3, 4, 5, 6, 1,
2. It is our intent that this flexible schedule will help our
students be more engaged and focused throughout the day.
Your student will be
notified of their homeroom assignment on a post card sent home,
as well as on our website.
The homeroom assignments will also be posted at the school
entrance the first day of school and staff will be available for
any assistance. In homeroom, class schedules and planners for
the school year will be distributed, as well as various forms
that need to be filled out and returned to the Middle School.
Parents should check their
student’s assignment planner throughout the year,
as well, to familiarize yourselves with the handbook section of
the planner; it contains school information and discipline
policies. We also have established a “parent portal” on our
district website so parents can use it as a reference tool to
check their student’s daily homework and classroom assignments.
We encourage you to sign up for this tool that will enable you
to keep track of your child’s progress in the middle school.
With your support, we are committed, as a team, to continue to
provide the very best education for your student in a safe,
supportive environment where students want to come to learn!
We understand how emotional and stressful starting the new
school year can be for students (and their parents). We will
make every effort to help alleviate any fears or concerns as
they arise. The easiest way for your student to feel
comfortable, make friends and get the most out of their Middle
School experience is to attend school every day and become
involved! We ask that parents encourage good attendance and
involvement in school clubs, after school homework help,
extra-curricular activities and sports.
A well-rounded,
involved student is a happy student!

I look forward to seeing
you at Open House. Best
wishes for an exciting and dynamic school year.
Sincerely,
Cynthia Benedict
