Welcome!
On behalf of the Board of Education and our school staff, I am
pleased to welcome you to the Port Jervis School District.
It is an honor to be the superintendent of a school district
that has
such a tremendous sense of pride in its children and their
accomplishments.
Port Pride. The
phrase was coined a few years ago to reflect the great sense of
pride that's displayed by the families, alumni and community
members who pack the house at Raider athletic games, student
concerts, plays and graduation.
Port Pride is also reflected in the large number of parents and
family members who volunteer regularly in our classrooms, serve
on committees, and participate in the Parent Teacher
Associations. And, it's displayed every time one of our
dedicated teachers goes the extra mile to help a struggling
student or when the community bands together to help a family
that's in need.
I am extremely proud of all that we have accomplished in Port
Jervis
over the past several years - individually and collectively - as
members of this great educational community. Good things are
happening in our schools. Students are benefiting from building
renovations, technology and innovative programs that our
teachers and staff are using to help students excel academically
and develop important life skills.
Outside of the classroom, our district also provides
opportunities for students to develop a strong sense of self and
community
by participating in clubs, service organizations and sports
teams. While, like most New York districts, we've had to
eliminate some extracurricular programs this year for budgetary
reasons, the district still provides numerous opportunities for
our students to get involved.
Over the summer, our Buildings and Grounds crews worked
diligently to get classrooms cleaned, floors shined, and playing
fields groomed.
They also helped move the
Student Registration and Pupil Personnel Services
offices, which are now located in the new modular at the Route
209 complex. The move provides easier access to both offices and
much-needed space at the Middle School, freeing two classrooms
that can now be used for students.
Work also continued on the Capital Renovation and Safety
Project
approved by voters in February 2010. As part of our efforts to
enhance school safety, secure vestibule entrances are being
added to the front of Hamilton Bicentennial Elementary School
and the two schools at the Route 209 Complex. Additionally,
we're finishing the window replacement project, replacing classroom heat/ventilation units district wide
to
improve air quality and energy efficiency, renovating five science classrooms,
and making other needed upgrades at Port Jervis High School.
Every school year provides us with renewed opportunities
to get involved in our schools.
I invite our families and community members to visit our schools,
attend concerts, and help us cheer on our athletes at sporting
events.
You can learn more about our programs - and our many
Points of Pride
- by visiting the different pages on this web site and our
Facebook page, reading the district newsletters, signing up to
receive School News Notifier messages, and viewing the Community
Bulletin Board and programs on cable Channel 20.
All are designed to keep you informed
-
and to provide us with the means to
celebrate our Points of Pride!
