Raider Athletics - Cross Country
Welcome to the 'Rock'
Home Course for the Raider Cross Country
Team
COURSE OUTLINE
"The Rock" is a 3.1 mile cross-country trail that traverses the
mountains, streams, and lakes of the Huguenot YMCA of Greater
New York facility, located just 3 miles from Port Jervis High
School.
The Rock is a medium-difficult course with three significant up
hill climbs, one on each mile. It also features four bridges.
The third bridge crosses the dam of the lake, providing runners
with a stunning view of Greenkill Lake. The middle leg of the
course circumnavigates the entire Greenkill Lake -the scenic
signature piece of the course.
The course is carved out of 50 miles of trail at the beautiful
YMCA facility, which contains nature trails, camps, three lakes,
a LEAD certified eco-friendly building, convention center,
gymnasium, adventure courses, and lodging.
HISTORY
Prior to the opening of the course on Sept. 9, 2009, the Port
Jervis Cross Country team did not have its own home course since
the 1970's when a course looped through the woods at Glennette
Field. Varsity Cross Country Coach Robert Dorn spearheaded the
concept of a "home" course on the scenic campus of the YMCA.
COMMUNITY SUPPORT
The vision for the course became a reality thanks to the efforts
of Coach Dorn, the YMCA's Assistant Director Chris Scheuer, and
the "sweat equity" of more than 70 volunteers from numerous
organizations who logged in more than 500 hours of labor to
prepare the course.
