Port Jervis schools participate
in the National School Lunch Program,
which regulates and
subsidizes the provision of complete, nutritionally balanced
meals.

School Lunches changed due to
new National Nutritional Standards
Menus now feature more fruits, vegetables and whole-grain rich
foods. Students will also notice a change in the portion size of
their main entrée -
while fruits and vegetable portions are
increasing, the protein & grain portions are shrinking to
reflect a new look of the “center of the plate.”
for more information about the new National Nutritional
Standards & the Healthier, Hunger Free Kids Act.
Lunch:
Students can purchase a complete lunch that includes skim
or no-fat chocolate milk, just
milk, or the sandwich of the day. Snacks are also available for
purchase.
Please note: The National School Lunch now
requires schools to offer meal portions by grade level, instead
of school level.
Separate lunch menus must now be provided for grades K-5, 6-8,
and 9-12. As a result, the menu for sixth graders at both
elementary schools is different from the students in grades K-5.
The food items on both menus are the same. The portion size is
different.

Free and Reduced-Priced School Meal Application
2012-13
The district is urging families to take advantage of the free
and reduced-priced meals available through the National School
Lunch Program. Application packets will be sent home with
students the first day of school. The application can also be
downloaded below.
Those who qualify will be eligible for free or reduced-priced
meals. The price for reduced meals is just .25 cents.
This could save your family close to $500 a year per child!
Who can get free meals?
Applications for free or reduced-priced lunch may be
completed anytime during the school year when a family’s income
changes.
•
The confidential program is available to all
households that meet
federal income guidelines - and these guidelines are higher
than
you might expect.
•
Students whose families receive food stamps or
other aids such
as TANF are automatically eligible - regardless of their income.
•
Most foster children, as well as homeless and migrant children,
are eligible.
Protecting your children's
privacy
- When students go through the lunch line, they carry nothing
that would identify them as a participant in the free and
reduced meal program. They simply enter their student Pin number
into the automated payment system and the cashier automatically
processes the transaction.
Applications
- The completed application should be returned to Food Service
Director Thomas Preiskines. For answers to questions regarding
the application or assistance completing the application, please call Mr. Preiskines at
858-3100, Ext. 13896.
Click here for answers to commonly asked
questions.
Please note
the application opens in "pdf" format and requires the Adobe Acrobat
Reader in order to download and print. If you do not have Adobe
Acrobat on your computer, you can
get a free copy from the Adobe web site.
Automated accounts provide fast service
With the use of a
computerized system, Food Service tracks student
information including account balances and food purchases. Each
student uses a personal Pin number when he or she
purchases meals. By eliminating the old pen and paper tally
sheets, the cafeteria staff is able to serve students quicker and
more efficiently - reducing the time students spend waiting in
line. |
