New
air filters installed at ASK Elementary School to reduce allergens
OCTOBER 2010
As
part of its commitment to maintain a healthy learning
environment for all students and staff, the District has
installed heavy-duty ventilation filters at ASK Elementary
School.
New filters were installed in the wing adjacent to
the library after recent air quality tests indicated that
allergens were slightly higher in that section than the rest
of the school.
Assistant Superintendent for Business Lorelei Case said
allergens tend to be higher in that section of the building
due to its proximity to the road and open fields.
While the allergens are not at a level to cause any health
concerns, the district is taking steps to maintain good air
quality until new heat/ventilation systems are installed in
the school this summer. In addition to installing the
heavy-duty filters in the library wing, the district has
ordered new filters for all ventilators in the building and
it will increase the filter replacement cycle. Case has also
asked everyone in the building to help by keep air flowing
by keeping air vents and windows free from obstruction.
“Good indoor air quality is a critical element that
contributes to a favorable learning climate,” said Case,
noting that this is one of the key issues that will be
addressed by the $14 million Capital Project approved by
voters last February. “Thanks to the community’s support, we
will be able to improve the air quality at ASK – and Port
Jervis High School – by replacing the antiquated ventilators
in both schools with new efficient units.”
