Radio
Disney knows how to throw a party!!
The crew from the number one kids’ radio network brought its
high energy road show to Port Jervis March 13 to host a dance
party for the students and staff at Anna S. Kuhl Elementary
School. Kids were all smiles as they sang songs, danced to their
favorite tunes and competed in contests ranging from the hula
hoop challenge to the athletic express.

The
school won the Radio Disney dance party by having one of the
highest participation rates in the New York State Empire Blue
Cross and Radio Disney Get Active, Get Fit Challenge! Disney
Radio Program Manager Leslie Finn announced at the party that
ASK Elementary School was one of the state’s top five schools.
In addition to the dance party, ASK students also won a deluxe
activity kit, which included $500 worth of playground equipment.
This
marks the second year Empire BlueCross and Radio Disney have
partnered together to bring the Get Active, Get Fit School
Challenge to schools throughout the state. Approximately 13,000
elementary school children accepted the challenge. The goal was
to motivate kids – and their families - to become physically fit
by engaging in fun activities for at least 20 minutes every day
– or as often as possible. This could include anything that got
students “up and moving” at home or at school – like playing
soccer, dancing, walking the dog or jumping rope.
In order to successfully complete the challenge, students had to
be active for a minimum of 40 of the 55 days in the program,
which ran from October 3 through November 26, 2011. The
students’ progress was tracked on charts provided to the
participating schools.
At
ASK Elementary School, 941 students – 42 percent of the school –
met the Empire BlueCross and Radio Disney fitness challenge. The
high rate of participation was among the highest in the state,
qualifying them to win the dance party. “Everyone worked really
hard to show that ASK is a healthy and active school,” said
physical education teacher and event organizer Nicole Beam.
The Get Active, Get Fit Challenge is one of many fun health/
fitness programs that the school’s Fits Kids Committee involves
students in every year at ASK Elementary School. Other programs
have included a Halloween Pedometer Challenge, fruit smoothie
taste tests and the Mileage Club, a fitness incentive program
designed to promote fitness, reduce playground hassles and fight
childhood obesity.
