Port’s top spellers advance to Tri-State Spelling Bee

Albatross, iguana, and gazelle. These are
some of the challenging words Port Jervis students had to spell
correctly to qualify for the 2012 Tri-State Spelling Bee.
The competition was steep at the district’s annual Spelling Bee
as 29 top spellers from grades 6-8 vied for the chance to
represent their school at the regional tournament. After several
rounds, and some very tough words, the field was narrowed to
five students.
Connor
MacNeil, Ben McCoy, Ricky Bedford, Selena Moreno, and Hasan
Escamilla will now advance on March 11 to the Tri-State Spelling
Bee, which is being hosted this year by the Port Jervis School
District. MacNeil and Ben McCoy are both sixth graders at
Hamilton Bicentennial Elementary School. The other students all
attend Port Jervis Middle School.
The following students qualified for the Port Jervis Bee by
earning high scores last month on a written spelling bee:
Port Jervis Middle School (Grade 8) - Casey Schnoor,
Aaron O’Connell, Jon Patzan, Hasan Escamilla, Maria Maglione,
Stephanie Muller, Sierra Spivey, Noel Figueroa, Ricky Bedford,

(Grade 7) - Jeff Mackin, Cady Robles, Lance Munoz, Tiahni
Morissey,
