Dr. Onofry returning
to ASK to serve as interim principal
POSTED DEC. 21, 2011
The
Port Jervis School District Board of Education has appointed
Dr. Craig Onofry to serve as interim principal of Anna S. Kuhl
Elementary School, beginning February 6.
Onofry, who is a Port Jervis High School graduate and former
Port Jervis teacher and principal, held this position last year
after retiring as superintendent of the Dover Union Free School
District in Dutchess County.
Superintendent John Xanthis said, “We are pleased that Dr.
Onofry will be returning to Anna S. Kuhl Elementary School. Dr.
Onofry is an exceptional educator who has the strong leadership,
communication and interpersonal skills needed to lead the school
for the remainder of the year. When he served as interim
principal last year, Dr. Onofry cultivated strong relationships
with the ASK faculty, staff, families and students; and did much
to pull everyone together to advance learning at the school. He
will now work closely with all of these groups to ensure
everyone receives the support, stability, and assistance needed
to move the school forward.”
A lifelong resident of Port Jervis, Dr. Onofry has a wealth of
educational experience and a strong sense of pride in ASK
Elementary School, where he taught physical education in the
late 1970s. After graduating from Port Jervis High School and
SUNY Cortland, Onofry taught for seven years in various
capacities in Port Jervis elementary schools. He later served as
principal of the former Sullivan Avenue Elementary School for
four years during which time the school was a finalist in the NY
State Elementary School Recognition Program.
Onofry, who holds a master’s degree from Marywood College and an
educational doctorate from Rutgers University, went on to serve
as superintendent of the Garrison School District in Putnam
County and then, most recently, the Dover Union Free School
District in Dutchess County.
