ASK Elementary School's Walking
School Bus
POSTED:
Oct. 17, 2012
Anna S. Kuhl Elementary School’s
Fit Kids Committee organized its second Walking
School Bus. All students in
grades 2-6 who are considered walkers were invited to
participate.
The caravan of students,
parents, staff and community leaders – many of whom were dressed in
bright yellow clothing and safety vests – enjoyed a fun walk to
school on October 4...It was like carpooling to school
without the car!
The Fit Kids Committee held the event - which has grown in
popularity since the first Walking School Bus hit the streets in
May - to encourage students to walk and enjoy exercise. Event
organizers Nicole Beam and Lori Sexton, studies show, for
various reasons, fewer children are walking to school, and more
children are at risk of becoming overweight.

The Walking School Bus started at the corner of East Main Street
and Kingston Avenue at the J’s Mobil Gas station and proceeded
down Kingston Avenue/Culvert Street/Route 209 until it reached
the ASK Elementary School playground. Fit Kids Committee members
and volunteers were stationed at each bus stop and walked with
the "bus." The route was also kept safe by Police
Detective Stan Buczek and other police officers who walked the
route on foot, and traveled along side the walkers by bike and
in a patrol car. Several Port Jervis officials also joined the
Walking School Bus, including Police
Chief Bill Worden, School
District Superintendent John Xanthis and Assistant Superintendent
Lorrie Case.
