Welcome Back to
School
First Day of 2012-13 School
Year
POSTED SEPT. 7, 2012
Pounding rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the Port Jervis
students on their first day back to school. Greeted by
faculty, staff and administrators who worked hard over the
summer to prepare for the new school year, students returned
September 5 to find many positive changes in their buildings
and classrooms.
Over the summer, needed repairs and improvements were made
through referendums approved by voters in 2011, and excess
funds from the 2010 Capital Referendum. In the elementary
schools, improved lighting, ventilation and heating systems
are providing healthier learning environments. At the Middle
School, the leaking roof was replaced and the worn library
tables were replaced with circular seating to create a more
cooperative learning environment.
One of the most popular changes is at Port Jervis High
School, which is now wired for Wifi. The new wireless
technology will provide students and staff with greater
access to web resources through wireless lap tops and
handled devices. This fall, the District is piloting a
laptop program in two high school classes. The long-term
goal is to improve instruction by providing every freshman
with access to his or her own laptop.
