Board of Education meeting January 7
The Port Jervis Board of Education is
holding a meeting on Thursday, Jan. 7 in the High School
cafeteria. The Board is scheduled to discuss and possibly adopt
a resolution for a capital renovation project. The meeting will
begin at 7:30 p.m., immediately following an executive session.
It will be televised live on cable Ch. 20.

Changes to district calendar
New dates for In-Service Days for Grades K-8
The dates for the upcoming K-8 In-Service
Days have been changed to accommodate revisions to the
2009-10 NYS testing schedule.
February 1 & March 22: Regular school days for Port
Jervis Middle School and both elementary schools. In-Service
Days for PJHS students only.
May 10 & May 17: New In-Service dates for students
in grades kindergarten through eight. Port Jervis Middle School
and both elementary schools are closed. Regular school days for
PJHS students.

January Regents Schedule is
online
Regents exams will be administered January 26-29.
Regular transportation will be provided all week
but, there won't be
any mid-day runs.

Parent Workshop:
Homework without
Tears
Thursday,
Jan. 14 at 6:30 p.m. HBE Library
(Snow date is Jan. 21)
Homework - Many students try to avoid it, but research shows
children who spend more time on regularly-assigned
homework, on average, do better in school. Parents play a
vital role in the process and can help their children
succeed by helping them develop good habits.

H1N1 vaccine available for general OC population
Now
that H1N1 vaccine can be given beyond the initial target
groups, the Orange County
Health Department wants residents to be aware that physicians' offices are now receiving
H1N1 vaccines regularly, plus OCDH has H1N1 clinics scheduled
during the winter break.

Student artwork brightens hospital
hallways
Port
Jervis art students are helping to brighten the hallways of Bon
Secours Community Hospital. Close
to 30 students created an original piece of art to donate to the
hospital. The recently-framed artwork now graces the main
hallways used by patients being treated in the emergency,
radiology, and diagnostic imaging departments.

Accardi and Nancy Wagner's high school cooking classes baked
close to 4,000 cookies for their annual holiday social and
cookie exchange.

2009 Songs for Troops
PJMS students
bring holiday cheer to troops
Port Jervis united with
eight other New York districts Dec. 16 to give soldiers serving
in Iraq a special gift –
a festive holiday concert broadcast live via the Intranet. For the
third year, Port Jervis musicians participated in Songs for Troops - a
“virtual” concert performed for U.S. Army soldiers who will
be away from their own children and families this Christmas. This year’s concert of over 600 students
included the Port Jervis Middle School Chorus and Symphonic
Band.

PJHS sophomore selected for
NASA program
High
School sophomore Joseph Mannion was selected by NASA to
participate in its prestigious Interdisciplinary National
Science Program Incorporating Research Experience, also known as
Inspire. The selected students participate in an online
learning community NASA engineers and scientists, and have the
option to compete for internships at NASA facilities.

The
Port Jervis Athletic Department is proud to announce the launch
of the new Raiders Web Site. The web pages are designed and
maintained by students in the Port Jervis High School advanced
digital photography class and the Varsity Club.

Port
Jervis High School band and chorus students ushered in the
holiday season Dec. 8 by performing seasonal favorites at this
year's Winter Concert.

student-athletes ring Salvation Army bell
More than 70 athletes volunteered at the Salvation Army's
Kettle at the Westfall Walmart Dec. 5. In spite of the cold
weather and heavy snow, the High School students accepted more
than $1,200 in donations.

HBE students make
toy boats at Home Depot
The
HBE kindergarten classes
went on a field trip recently to
The Home Depot. The students toured
the store and made a toy sail boat during a special kids'
building workshop.

Port students published in
national collection
The
creative writing of Port Middle School and High School students
was published recently in the American Library of Poetry’s
annual collection. The students submitted the poems last year to
the American Library of Poetry contest when they were in Kendra
Marshall’s and Cristina Lundewall’s English classes.

Arts Careers Academy, took top honors in the 16th annual Great
American Smoke Out Poster contest. Congratulations to Rebecca

Standing
Port Jervis School District Superintendent John
Xanthis announced recently that all Port Jervis schools are now
in good standing. The announcement at the Superintendent’s
Conference Day came one week after the New York State Department
of Education released Port Jervis Middle School from the Title I
“In Need of Improvement” list.
